Great Decisions Discussion Group 2017

The Great Decisions discussion group is America’s largest discussion program on World Affairs. Each year, eight thought provoking foreign policy challenges are selected for study. The topics for 2017 are: THE FUTURE OF EUROPE, TRADE AND POLITICS, CONFLICT IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA, SAUDI ARABIA IN TRANSITION, U.S. FOREIGN POLICY AND PETROLEUM, LATIN AMERICA’S POLITICAL PENDULUM, PROSPECTS FOR AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN and NUCLEAR SECURITY.  A briefing book is provided for each topic. Group visits historic places or has speakers about significant people or movements in the Southeastern Colorado area.

September 19, 2014: Visit Guffey, an old mining town with lots of character. History will be presented by Betty Royce, deputy sheriff of Park County.

October 17, 2014: Visit Chico Basin Ranch with Michael Moon.

November 21, 2014: The Courthouse Controversy (how it almost didn’t get built, how it was almost torn down, and how it is preserved today) presented by Leah Davis Witherow.

December 19, 2014: Travel to Denver to tour the Brown Palace Hotel and Union Station.

January 16, 2015: History of the El Paso County Poor Farm with Robin Lynch

February 20, 2015: Jessy Randall, Curator of Special Collections at Colorado College, will discuss Helen Hunt Jackson’s life and the writing of Ramona.

March 20, 2015: The history of St. George’s Anglican Church by Rev. Don Armstrong and Helene Schafer.

April 17, 2015: Chief Manitou and his contributions to the Pikes Peak Region with author Robert Cronk.
